The referee probably has the right of it, honestly - Michael expresses no regrets after the whole thing is said and done, and barely seems to really be attending to the discussion about his fate. He still seems pretty out of it, no longer setting his own hand on fire just to see it, but kinda just staring at nothing. The direct orders are what get his attention; he focuses on the rooster trainer, and nods in a somewhat distracted way before wandering off.
In the heat of the moment, just for a second, that felt amazing! And then, all of a sudden, it really really didn't.
He ought to be happy, right? He won the fight! He showed all those people that he's not - that he's fine. If they're mad at him, well, that shouldn't matter. After the shitshow of the first fight, he needed to show them all that he wasn't some weakling, or he'd never have another peaceful moment on this stupid island.
...not that he feels very strong right now. His stomach hurts. Not from the cut, from...something else.
There's a part of him that sort of wants to set the whole colosseum on fire just to get rid of these feelings. Another larger part is pretty sure that this is all a trap. He beat the crap out of that guy's robot monster, of course he's gonna use the time to figure out a way to utterly destroy Michael tomorrow! It's what Michael would do. He's got all those people on his side, and Michael's alone, so there's literally no reason not to.
It'd be tempting to just ghost on this entire thing, if he could. Pretend he just didn't care enough to gather all the materials, rather than...anything else. But they are all stuck on an island. A not-that-big island. Where he's definitely likely to run across some of these folks again.
He'll need to practice, and develop a new strategy. If he loses this one, he's gonna be the laughingstock of this place. But the materials are the first step, so he'll go about that first. As much as he wants to rush through it to get as much prep time as possible, his inherent work ethic doesn't really allow him to just half-ass the task - though he's a little unclear on what the guy meant by "seashells" and "artifacts", he'll at least make a good-faith effort?
Is he bringing this somewhere before the fight, so the dude has time to make repairs beforehand? Also are we rolling for materials gathering
