The boy detective is very smart, and clever, and insightful. But he is overlooking one very important piece of evidence, that's all but staring him in the face.

Maybe it's self-pitying too, because there's a whole little language of sticking tongues out in different configurations that he's missing out on. Still, he's talking without a tongue. Clearly, tongues are a little optional to the whole talking thing.
